U2 song One contains the nation's favourite lyric - "One Life, with Each Other Sisters, Brothers" - according to a poll of a music TV station's viewers.
The 1992 song, re-released in collaboration with R&B singer Mary J Blige, beat lyrics from legends like the Beatles and David Bowie to newcomers such as the Arctic Monkeys.
The Smiths' angst-ridden lyric "So You Go, And you Stand On Your Own. And you Leave on Your Own" from the track How Soon is Now? took second place in the poll of over 13,000 music fans.
Cult band Nirvana follows in third place with Smells Like Teen Spirit and the line "I Feel Stupid and Contagious, Here we are Now, Entertain Us".

LONDON—The Irish band U2 has given Britain its favourite song lyric, according to a survey released today by music channel VH1. The line "One life, with each other, sisters, brothers" from the song "One" topped the poll.
Runner-up was the downbeat "So you go and you stand on your own, and you leave on your own, and you go home, and you cry, and you want to die" from The Smiths' "How Soon is Now.''
A line from Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" — "I feel stupid and contagious, here we are now, entertain us" — came third. Bob Marley's "Redemption Song" and Coldplay's "Yellow'' came fourth and fifth.
More than 13,000 people chose from 100 lyrics on the station's website, selected by music industry figures.
