Australia's ARIA Music Awards surfing a wave of fresh talent

Fabulous nobodies for ARIAs

Iain Shedden, music writer for The Weekend

October 22, 2005

ANTHONY Callea will be one of the most famous faces on stage at the 2005 ARIA Awards tomorrow night but 18 months ago, no one knew his name. That is the flavour of this year's ARIAs, the annual celebration of everything great and good in the Australian music industry.

This year's list of award contenders is made up largely of newcomers who are hoping that a few trophies collected at the Sydney Superdome will be the catalyst for a lengthy career. Among them is Callea, 22, last year's Australian Idol runner-up who has topped the singles and album charts in the past six months. His self-titled debut album is up for best selling album.

The leading contender, with seven nominations, is Melbourne singer-songwriter Missy Higgins, on the back of her debut album The Sound of White.

Bondi's pop bard Ben Lee and Kiwi rock siblings Evermore have five nominations, while Sydney singer Sarah Blasko has four.

With a handful of other new faces in the running, 2005 is shaping up to be a break from the usual ARIA celebration of the mainstream.

iPod News Net: iTunes Australia to launch October 25th???

Apple may be preparing to launch iTunes for Australia later this month, according to a report by AppleTalk. The blog reports that Apple has organized a press briefing on October 25th, where is Apple's vice president of the iTunes Music Store and iPod Marketing will appear: "Apple Australia has organised a major briefing on Tuesday at which the worldwide head of iTunes Music Store and worldwide head of iPod Marketing will appear. It's highly unusual for Apple to hold a press briefing unless a product announcement is being made, and it's hard to imagine the head of iTMS flying from the US to Australia for any other reason than the announcement of iTMS Australia. Other corroborating evidence is that Australian music video producers have recently shot some videos specifically for playback on small screens - likely to be iTMS exclusives for the launch."

Apple Australia has organised a major briefing on Tuesday at which the worldwide head of iTunes Music Store and worldwide head of iPod Marketing will appear. It's highly unusual for Apple to hold a press briefing unless a product announcement is being made, and it's hard to imagine the head of iTMS flying from the US to Australia for any other reason than the announcement of iTMS Australia.

Other corroborating evidence is that Australian music video producers have recently shot some videos specifically for playback on small screens - likely to be iTMS exclusives for the launch. Take this as you will: there's been no end of iTMS rumors to date that haven't panned out, but then, there has never been a media event with the iTMS chief in attendance before.

The Australian branch of the iTunes Music Store had been rumoured to be announced on October 3rd and 17th but was delayed on both occasions.

Australian Music Industry: Sarah Blasko, End Of Fashion, The Veronicas all rising stars

From Entertainment.News.com.au, story by Alex Murdoch

THERE is talk of a changing of the guard. As the movers and shakers of the music world sit down for their three-course meal at this year's Australian Record Industry Association Awards, a number of new faces will stand out from the crowd.

Last year Sarah Blasko, End Of Fashion, Evermore, Lior, Mia Dyson, Thirsty Merc, The Veronicas, Wolfmother and Joel Turner were little more than blips on the Australian music radar. Now they're cresting a wave of fresh talent, signalling what some observers suggest is a much-needed industry change.

But are these up-and-comers a sign of things to come? Or have they simply slipped through the back door while big-name artists Pete Murray, Powderfinger, Kasey Chambers, Jet and Alex Lloyd have been taking a break?

In the fickle world of Australian music, where careers are regularly made and broken, it could be a bit of both.

The only notable exceptions to this phenomenon are Missy Higgins, winner of last year's best single gong and nominated for seven ARIA music awards for her album The Sound Of White, and Ben Lee, with five ARIA nominations for Awake Is The New Sleep.

While Higgins is expected to be this year's hit, however, her distinctive twang won't be the only talent on display. Sydney-based Blasko is a star on the rise, with her debut long-player album The Overture & The Underscore nominated for four ARIAs including Best Album of The Year and Best Female Artist.

Ironically, 29-year-old Blasko, who spent 10 years gigging before exploding on to the airwaves of Triple J, has been described as a darker version of the 20-year-old Higgins.

But when the singer/songwriter was tracked down by phone at London's Heathrow Airport, ARIA nominations were the last things on her mind.

In fact Blasko admits with just a 48-hour window to fly from North America to Australia and back again, she might not be able to make it to the awards ceremony at all: "I'm on my way to America to do shows with Martha Wainwright and James Blunt in the US and Canada," she says.

Having just finished supporting Tom McRae in Britain, performing shows in Ireland, Scotland and England, Blasko says her biggest fear is not lack of recognition but rather, standing still.

"I think what I fear more than anything is being comfortable," she says.

Although still classed as a breakthrough artist, this is not Blasko's first year in the ARIA nominations.

Her six-track independently produced EP Prelusive, released in 2002, scored her a surprise nomination in the Best Female Artist category.

For Perth band End Of Fashion, however, an ARIA nomination is a crucial step in their "big picture" plans for international stardom.

This year the band's single O Yeah, from their self-titled album, has been nominated for Breakthrough Artist Single against tough competition from Joel Turner and the Modern Day Poets, Kisschasy, The Veronicas and Wolfmother.

Frontman Justin Burford says the band was always careful to keep the big picture in view.

"We're very focused about what we want to get out of our music because we see End Of Fashion as a long-term gig," he says.

"The only bands that really do well out of Perth are the ones that do know where they want to go, like Eskimo Joe.

"You have to be careful about what you do and keep the big picture in perspective."

With gigs already lined up in London and New Zealand – and Europe and the US on the cards for next year – End Of Fashion seemingly is well on track.

Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl” first online million-seller, Platinum Award to be presented October 21st

Gwen Stefani is set to become the first ever pop star to sell one million legal downloads.

The former No Doubt singer, turned solo star, is understood to have shifted 980,000 downloads of the track "Hollaback Girl" by early October 2005, at a rate of around 14,000 a week. The song went digitally platinum this week.

Stefani is to be presented with an award after reaching the historic landmark with sales of the track, which is taken from her debut solo album, "Love Angel Music Baby".

Stefani, who called the achievement "bananas", will be given a certificate at her show at the Hollywood Bowl in California on October 21.

She said: "It's always an honor to be recognized for your music, and this is really the coolest. It's exciting to see people embrace the song and really make it part of their lives. Whether it's CDs, computers, or cellphones...it really is bananas."

Hollaback Girl reached number one in the US charts this summer - although it only managed number eight in Britain.
