BACKGROUND on South by Southwest: Facts, stats, expanded info on government support & quotes below
from top40-charts.com
SYDNEY, Australia - Over 420 Australian and New Zealand artists applied for the crucial showcase side of SxSW, which has proven to be a groundbreaking event for our artists seeking recording, publishing, management, agency or touring deals in the lucrative North American market. But a whopping 8000 artists from around the world submitted applications for the coveted one-hour shows that make or break bands to music and media professionals.
The 40 bands playing in 2006 is an eightfold increase from the five that appeared in 2002. The 200+ OZ & NZ registrants in addition to artists will be over eight times the 25 attending in 2002.
With over 10,000 music business registrants including 1000 key print, radio and television journalists, it's a networking beehive which the Australian Trade Commission (AUSTRADE) has supported for four years with a major 36 square metre stand presence, a sponsored 10 act Australian Barbecue Concert on top of the night shows & a 36 page free 'street-press' style magazine with 15,000 copies of the 'Australian Music Guide' circulated at key music and book retailers, venues and in each delegate's showbag.
New Zealand Trade & Enterprise, in concert with the New Zealand Music Industry Commission, has also booked its fourth annual stand and will hold an opening night party/concert of Kiwi bands. In addition, the West Australian state government will host its third private party at SxSW and assist in travel expenses and promotion of participating WA acts through Arts WA and the WA Music Industry Association. Continuing support of governments has added to continued success of Australian and New Zealand artists & businesses.
Commenting on the largest number of Australian bands and music executives in the US at any one time, AUSTRADE's Business Development Manager of the recently created Australian Music Office at the Los Angeles Consulate, Tony George, states, 'AUSTRADE's Music Office has gone the extra mile this year by spearheading innovative new ways to give artists, bands and music industry executives exposure and networking opportunities at this mammoth music marketplace which has been a critical strategy of music exporting over the past three years as the result of government and industry synergy. Our continued investment is a result of escalating success.'
Among the initiatives are a teleconferencing 'boot camp' where bands and delegates will gather in AUSTRADE offices across Australia six weeks out from SxSW, to get the latest information on visa procurement, publicity, promotion, dealmaking opportunities and other strategies of attacking the North American market from experts in the online networking session. Aside from the resources of the three day trade fair stand presence and marketing magazine, media appearances and in-store shows are also being lined up as well as airplay on satellite radio and Internet sites.
AUSTRADE - in association with the non-profit Australian Music Collective which produces the SxSW Australian Barbecue Concert of ten acts March 17 in Austin-is also facilitating a major showcase for the industry in Los Angeles Monday March 13 prior to SxSW at the legendary Troubador in Hollywood as well as two New York showcases in New York March 21 and 22 after SxSW concludes for music executives and agents in that industry centre at venues to be announced.
SxSW representative for Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii, Phil Tripp, is based in Sydney at IMMEDIA! which for four years has expanded the attendance and enabled the success of participants from the farthest countries in the world that participate. 'Having been in the industry 30 years, Australia for 25 and having run national presences at global music markets for 20, we knew the potential for Australia and New Zealand at SxSW was phenomenal since our live performance based artist and contemporary music styles matched the needs of the North American marketplace that SxSW services. As the event has grown over the past four years to incorporate more countries' attendees, we've reaped the benefits from creating and maintaining a strong Australian 'brand' at the event through the governments' support of stands, promotion and media. At least 10 major deals have come out of 2005's SxSW AustralAsian Invasion and we feel the outcome of this year's participation will make a major contribution to our export music income.'
The AustralAsian South by Southwest website is at http://www.themusic.com.au/sxsw. The official South by Southwest website is at http://www.sxsw.com For further information, images & interviews contact Phil Tripp tripp@sxsw.com or (02) 9557 7766

Coldplay, Nickeblack, Michael Buble to perform at Canada's JUNO Awards, April 2nd
Coldplay, Michael Bublé and Nickelback First Acts Announced to Perform on The 2006 JUNO Awards, April 2
Posted by: Tripster on channelcanada.com
The 2006 JUNO Awards broadcast on CTV is shaping up to be one of the best yet. International superstars Coldplay, Michael Bublé and Nickelback have been confirmed to perform from Halifax, Nova Scotia on the April 2 broadcast, CTV and The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) announced today. It’s the first round of broadcast-related announcements about internationally-acclaimed acts scheduled to perform at the 35th anniversary of the JUNO Awards, Canada’s Music Awards. Nominations for the JUNO Awards will be announced February 15 in Toronto.
“These three world-class acts underscore how The 2006 JUNO Awards continues to grow in both prestige and popularity as Canada’s pre-eminent awards broadcast,” said Susanne Boyce, CTV’s President of Programming and Chair of the CTV Media Group. “Wait to you see what else we have in store!”
“The JUNO Awards is one of the biggest musical events in North America,” said Melanie Berry, President of CARAS. “Our celebration of the Canadian music industry and its talent continues to attract world-renowned artists to our stage. Today’s announcement kicks off what promises to be the first of many exciting announcements to come.”
Right from Coldplay's first single "Yellow" going to #1 at Rock Radio in Canada to their current #1 single "Talk," Canada has embraced this band. With concerts that sell out in a minute to police escorts at radio stations to the enthusiastic live audiences - the band is very well aware of their Canadian fans' devotion.
"Our Canadian fans are extraordinary - we love Canada!" said lead singer Chris Martin.
Coldplay's most recent globe-conquering release X&Y debuted at #1 in 32 countries, including Canada. The band is currently up for three Grammy Awards (they have previously won four) and also four Brit Awards. Coldplay is just beginning a second North American tour in support of X&Y and are thrilled that it includes a stop at The 2006 JUNO Awards in Halifax.
Since the February 2005 release of It's Time, 21st-century crooner Michael Bublé has been on a whirlwind ride that has taken him on sold-out headlining tours to four different continents. In less than a year, It’s Time has sold over four million copies worldwide while the Vancouver native has solidified his status as one of the world's great entertainers. His recently-released DVD Caught In The Act captures all of the fun and spontaneity of Bublé and his band in concert. His self-penned single, "Home" has the distinction of being the most-heard song on Canadian radio in 2005, reaching an audience estimated to exceed 382 million people. Bublé's incredible year was capped by the announcement that It's Time has been honoured with a Grammy Award nomination for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album.
One of Canada’s biggest musical exports, multi-platinum rock icons Nickelback have sold over 19 million records around the world to date. They've won seven JUNO Awards and have been nominated 13 times. In October of 2005, Alberta’s Chad Kroeger, Ryan Peake, Mike Kroeger and Daniel Adair celebrated the release of their fourth major album, All The Right Reasons, with outstanding debuts at the top of both the Canadian SoundScan Top 200 Sales Chart and the Billboard Top 200 Sales Chart. Nickelback is a success story built on the road, on the radio and, above all, by great rock songs. With their all-inclusive approach and across-the-board appeal, they're destined to be a mainstay in the music industry for years to come.
In April 2005, 1.34 million viewers watched The 2005 JUNO Awards from Winnipeg on CTV. In all, more than 5.7 million Canadians tuned in to watch some part of the show – an increase of almost half a million viewers compared to the 2004 broadcast - making it once again the most-watched Canadian awards telecast. CTV began broadcasting The JUNO Awards in 2002 when it telecast the Awards from St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, before taking it to Ottawa (2003), Edmonton (2004) and Winnipeg (2005).
Sponsors for The 2006 JUNO Awards include FACTOR, Canada’s Private Radio Broadcasters and the Government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage’s “Canada Music Fund”, Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, the Province of Nova Scotia, the Halifax Regional Municipality, Events Halifax and Radio Starmaker Fund. Broadcast sponsors for the event are General Motors, Pantene Pro-V, Doritos and Nice ’n Easy.

JustADrop.org providing global water projects, accepts online donations
The charity supports water, sanitation and health projects worldwide. It also assists in providing water purifying tablets, water containers and hygiene packs to the victims of disasters, such as in times of major floods and earthquakes.
In Cambodia, ‘Just a Drop’ has built 50 new wells in nine villages, restored five other wells and launched a community health programme.
In Ethiopia ‘Just a Drop’ installed more protected wells and started a community health programme.
In Mozambique and Malawi money from Just a Drop has helped to drill 105 new boreholes, restored 90 other boreholes, built 2000 household sanitation platforms and 14 double latrine blocks for schools and clinics.
In Swaziland alone ‘Just a Drop’ has helped to provide safe drinking water for 5,600 children and adults as well as build 700 latrines.
And in times of crisis such as the Hurricane Mitch disaster in Central America and the catastrophic earthquake in Turkey, ‘Just a Drop’ has helped transport hygiene packs, portable water containers and water purifying tablets.
In all these global projects, the aim is a simple one. But one that can mean the difference between life and death.
Just a Drop has already made a significant impact across the world. By providing clean water close to their homes, they have saved the lives of hundreds of children under the age of five whose immune systems are unable to fight off pollution and diseases such as diarrhoea, dysentery and cholera found in dirty water. But there is still so much more to be done.

WaterAid.org upgrades website, celebrates 25th anniversary of bringing water to thirsty
WaterAid launches exciting new website
January 2006
Visitors to the WaterAid website will notice a number of exciting changes thanks to a redesign launched on Monday 9 January. 2006 marks WaterAid's 25th anniversary and the launch of a new logo as well as a new more user friendly website.
The homepages have been redesigned to give maximum exposure to appeals and campaigns as well as the research and learning taking place in WaterAid's 15 country programmes. Navigation has been enhanced to make it easier for users to find what they want.
A new Events section has been created, linking in to an events fundraising micro site where supporters can easily build their own online sponsorship page to raise money for any event in which they are participating.
"Building on the strengths of the old WaterAid site we have made a number of alterations to the look and feel of the pages as well as their technical configuration. We hope these changes will make for a satisfying user experience and allow people to view the full breadth of information on our organisation." Vincent Casey, Internet manager, WaterAid.
Font sizes have been increased and we have tried to make substantial use of photography from our country programmes. The increased font size and changes to the way the templates are coded are also designed to make the site more accessible to disabled users. The site is now fully compliant with W3C Priority 1 accessibility guidelines.
The WaterAid network consists of an international site which acts as a portal to the United Kingdom, United States, Australia, Ghana, Nigeria, Ethiopia and Mali websites. Clear branding inserted into the top banners of each of these sites fully informs the user where they are on the network. The platform has capacity for further country sites to be constructed by the country programmes.
"It is important that we achieve optimal rankings in search engines such as Google and Yahoo so our templates have been coded in a search engine friendly manner. We would like to encourage people to stay in touch with us and informed about our work so we have made it easy to sign up to our various electronic newsletters." Concluded Casey.
