Top bands to rock Tassie for a cause
By KANE YOUNG, themercury.news.com.au
SOME of the biggest names in Australian music will perform at a huge concert in Launceston next month _ and it's all for a good cause.
The inaugural MS Fest, to be held at Launceston's Royal Park Regatta Grounds on Saturday March 11, will feature performances from some of the country's most popular rock, hip-hop and dance acts.
It is shaping to be the state's second-biggest music event of the year, trailing only the Falls Festival.
Grinspoon, Shihad, Rogue Traders, The Herd, COG, Fast Crew, Bliss n Eso, True Live, Behind Crimson Eyes, Stand Defiant, Durbeyfield, the Dead Abigails, The Embers and Ten Bears will perform on the main stage, with dance acts Poxy Music, NuBreed, Ajax, Goodwill, John Course, Gillie and Boogs behind the decks in the Ministry Of Sound Clubbers Guide Arena.
Skateboarding fans will also be treated to an exhibition by current Australian champion and ex-pat Tasmanian George Newsholme and members of the Red Herring Skate Team including Brendon Hill and Laif Johannesen.
The MS Society of Tasmania has organised the event as part of its 50th birthday celebrations, with all profits raised from the concert going towards further research into the disease and provision of support services to Tasmanians with multiple sclerosis.
The concert is already proving to be extremely popular, with 1500 discounted early-bird tickets having already sold out.
Tickets are now $60 each and are available from nine outlets around the state, including RuffCut Records and Ellison Hawker Newsagency in Hobart.
MS Fest will run from 11am to midnight.
Discount travel packages (including bus and concert tickets and accommodation) for patrons travelling to Launceston for the event are available from the Launceston Travel and Information Centre (1800651827).
Bus services will also be available for return travel on the day.
For more information on the bands, venue and tickets go to www.msfest.com

Blue Pie artists Scoldees a harmonic folk combo
about the band, from www.scoldees.com
Paul Andersen, Entertainment Today, LA:
" Take four best friends, give them voices capable of bloodline-like four-part harmonies, the talent to write catchy hooks and melodies, and the will to take their music to the public on their own terms (adding a rather bent view of life and a propensity to laughter), and the result will be a band like the scoldees."
Ingredients:
Nancy Sirianni (lead vocal/guitar),
Jack Hoffmann (lead vocal/guitar),
John Collis (percussion/vocals) and
Ted Rydzewski (bass/vocals).
Producer John Michel often joins the band on drums and percussion. Their debut album, My Pathetic Life, received terrific reviews both in the press and on the web, accumulated over 15,000 downloads on various music websites, and six cuts from the CD received airplay across the country on Top 40, AAA and Adult Contemporary radio. Nightcap World is their latest CD, and it is currently getting airplay on over 270 stations nationwide, with "adds" in more than 225 radio markets. Their sound has been described as an organic fusion of rich harmonies, chunky guitars, fluid bass, with old (and some new) world percussion; an eclectic acoustic style that has been called everything from progressive to pop.
the scoldees’ credits include:
THE MOUNTAIN STAGE NEWSONG FESTIVAL 2003
THE KERRVILLE FOLK FESTIVAL 2002 & 2003
BETHLEHEM MUSIKFEST 2000 & 2001
WOODSTOCK ‘99 (The Emerging Artist Stage)
Reunion concerts in 1999 & 2000 at Yasgur‘s Farm, Bethel, NY
THE WHISKY A-GO-GO Hollywood, CA
THE BOTTOM LINE, NYC, opening spots in front of Nancy Wilson, John Sebastian, and Dan Hicks
The scoldees were once booked to open for Missing Persons, but Missing Persons didn't show. How funny is that. They also had a well received, albeit politically incorrect (Gary The Retard's Birthday Parody), performance on The Howard Stern Show on syndicated radio and on national television.
about the players
NANCY SIRIANNI
NANCY SIRIANNI is a singer and songwriter, producer of music, stage and comedy, as well as being an accomplished actor. She owns and operates independent record label OHR Records, distributed nationally in the USA, and Spinning Plates Productions, Inc., with offices and a fully automated recording studio on Long Island’s North Shore. She has been Executive Producer of the scoldees' three CDs, and is currently collaborating with several songwriters in Nashville, where she is represented by BME Music. Her acting credits include numerous stage productions Off and Off-Off Broadway, 8 independent films, a guest-starring role on the weekly series High Tide starring Rick Springfield, and featured roles on America's Most Wanted and most recently on NBC Television’s LAW & ORDER Criminal Intent. She is represented by Omnipop Talent Agency, NY and LA.
JACK HOFFMANN
They call him Jackie Spreadsheet. Jack is really a guru in Excel, Powerpoint, and Access data bases. He can draw a bit in pencil as well. As Jack says " I can make a nice hearty Squash soup as well. I'm a pretty good Father too. We'll I guess we'll see about that when the fruit leaves the tree. " Jack is also a part time comedian when he writes after a few beers.
JC - "MOOSE"
JC is the man that twangs the guitar. In JC's own words " I can play a decent rhythm guitar, smack interesting things in time, and devise a vocal harmony line to nearly anything. I also like to dig my hands into graphic design and layout. I like making things look pretty, basically....although, I haven't had much luck with my own appearance. I have an uncanny ability to spot inconsistencies, making me a good editor of a sort, I suppose. In my spare time when I am not saving the world I can suck down beer and STILL come off as a complete idiot. Last but not least, I have a good heart and an open ear, and most of my friends find it very comfortable sharing their problems with me."
You can keep an eye for JC's new talk show.
GLEN SAUNDERS

Musicrypt Inc.(TSX-V: MCT, OTCBB:MCYPF) in digital music distribution deal with Spin Cycle, I2R, Canada Disc
Musicrypt Signs Three New Independent Music Customers
Digital Delivery Now Available to the Independent Record Industry Across
Canada With DMDS
TORONTO, Feb. 9 /CNW/ - Musicrypt Inc., (TSX-V: MCT, OTCBB:MCYPF), the
industry's leading digital music distribution company, today announced that it
has entered into agreements with three new customers to use its patented
Digital Media Distribution System (DMDS) to securely distribute independent
music to radio, press, music publishers, booking agents, promoters and other
destinations including U.S. radio.
Spincycle, a division of Frontside Promotions, based in Vancouver; Canada
Disc and Tape, based in Calgary with offices in Edmonton and Saskatoon; and
I2R, based in Montreal, will join with RDR Music Group and CIRPA to provide
extensive access to DMDS for the vibrant and growing independent music sector
in Canada.
"We are pleased to welcome these quality organizations. Having them on
board will help us realize our goal of making DMDS available to everyone who
wants to use this invaluable tool," said Cliff Hunt, Chairman and co-founder
of Musicrypt. "As a previous independent label owner, I would have loved to
have been able to deliver my music to North American radio on the same level
playing field as the major labels. These are all revenue generating deals, and
the independent sector is expanding and will continue to grow in numbers and
influence."
Musicrypt's Digital Media Distribution System (DMDS) has delivered over
3,000 songs to over 2 million destinations throughout North America, clearly
making it the dominant secure digital delivery system. Musicrypt is partnered
in the U.S. with industry leaders Billboard Radio Monitor and Nielsen BDS
(VNU/AEX), as well as Hit Predictor, and is endorsed by Clear Channel Radio
(NYSE:CCU) and XM Satellite Radio (NASDAQ:XMSR). Major Canadian broadcast
chains representing 100% of all chart monitored radio stations use DMDS,
including Canada's three largest broadcasters, Standard Radio, Corus Radio and
Rogers Media Broadcasting on an exclusive basis. Musicrypt's DMDS is the
digital distribution system of choice by the Canadian Music Industry including
SONY BMG Music, EMI Music, Universal Music and Warner Music.
About Musicrypt:
Musicrypt's patented Digital Media Distribution System (DMDS) is the
leading secure B2B digital delivery solution for the music industry. DMDS is a
web-based delivery system that pioneers secure digital file distribution by
incorporating biometrics, high-value encryption and watermarking. The first
application of DMDS replaces the physical distribution of new musical
recordings by record companies from the studio, internally, and to radio
stations with more secure, more effective and less costly digital distribution
of broadcast quality media via the Internet. Musicrypt trades on the TSX
Venture Exchange (TSX-V) under the symbol MCT and in the U.S. under
OTCBB:MCYPF. For more information on Musicrypt, please visit www.musicrypt.com

The Australian Music Prize Final Eight Announced
by Tim Cashmere
February 6 2006
The final eight for the Australian Music Prize was finally announced today. The shortlist is made up of the eight highest rated albums, judged by a panel of 61 judges from Australia’s media and retail industries, as well as a varied group of musicians.
The final eight is diverse, with some of the bigger albums mixing it with relative unknowns, showing the AMP 2005.
These albums will now be re-judged, from best to worst by a large number of judges, which will result in a single album winning $25,000 prize money and an awful lot of free publicity.
Congratulations to all the artists who made it into the top eight. The albums are:
Wolfmother – Wolfmother
The Mess Hall – Notes from a Ceiling
The Drones – Wait Long By The River And The Bodies Of Your Enemies Will Float By
Tex, Don and Charlie – All Is Forgiven
TZU – Smiling At Strangers
The Devastations – Coal
The Go Betweens – Oceans Apart
Ben Lee – Awake Is The New Asleep

Australian Music Prize between Lee, Wolfmother
07feb06
COMEBACK kid Ben Lee and rockers Wolfmother are vying for the Australian Music Prize.
Eight finalists were revealed yesterday for the inaugural AMP ceremony on Wednesday, March 8.
Albums by Lee and Wolfmother were named alongside the Devastations, the Drones, Go-Betweens, the Mess Hall, Tex Don and Charlie, and TZU.
Industry pundits have described the AMP as an ARIA award with credibility. Based on Britain's Mercury Prize, the AMP carries a cash prize of $25,000.
AMP organisers say their judging panel is free from record label ties and conflicts of interest.
Conversely, the ARIA Awards have strong links to major labels.
While Lee and Wolfmother are crowd favourites, the AMP nomination is another success story for scorching blues-rock duo, the Mess Hall.
Wolfmother drummer Myles Heskett said the AMP nomination was a compliment.
He also defended his record label's recent controversial decision to break ranks at an important US music festival.
Modular Records boss Stephen Pavlovic will distance his acts from an Australian music contingent at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas, set down for March 10 to 19.
As 40 local bands take on America at SxSW, Pavlovic will launch Wolfmother and the Presets at a private event.
"It's not about patriotism or Aussies conquering the world," Heskett said. "It's about bands on the label being of an international standard."

Hi, all!
I hope the New Year has gotten off to a great start for all of you! Mine sure has! I'm off to Tamworth in a few days, for the gigantic annual Golden Guitar Festival. I'm so excited. This will be my first time there, so please, country music fans, come to my shows and show your support! Gig details can be found...on the GIG page!
Apart from this, I've got some exciting news to share with all of you. First, my song "Sounds Good To Me" was chosen to be included on the current Sounds Like Cafe Vol. 9 compilation. The CD is currently being played in more than 1000 cafes and coffee shops around Australia, so if you happen to hear "Sounds Good To Me" while you're sippin' java at your local hangout, please let the staff know how much you LOVE the tune! (This will push me up the Sounds Like Cafe monthly chart! I have ulterior motives for just about everything...! Just kidding.)
Hurricane Healing
And I'm so honored to have my song "Alive And Kickin'" included on the upcoming Hurricane Healing Vol. 3 compilation. Hurricane Healing is basically a digital download store that donates 50 cents on every dollar to the Salvation Army in the areas badly affected by last year's hurricanes. I'm so glad to have found a way to help out a little, and so can you, by purchasing music off the Hurricane Healing compilation albums. There are plenty of great artists who are donating their music to their project, like Eric Bibb, Janice Marie and James Blundell, just to mention a few.
"Alive And Kickin'" is in the Top 20 on the Indie World Country Chart! And climbing! Yay!
And yes, the new cd is coming. The process has been delayed a little, but a new single will be ready for radio release very soon, I promise. Please check back soon!
In the meantime,
Have a good time...ALL the time! (I just watched Spinal Tap the other night...can you tell?)
Much love,
Ann-Marita
