Aussie music talent heads to Hollywood, then SXSW
from news.ninemsn.com.au
Some of the country's best-known music acts will fly the Aussie flag in Hollywood next month before heading to the South by Southwest festival in Texas.
Five groups - The Living End, The Flairz, The Mess Hall, Kisschasy and Decoder Ring - will play Hollywood's Troubadour on March 13.
"For Australian bands to be showcasing in this venue now means Australian rock is once again a serious player on the LA music landscape," said Australian Trade Commission spokesman Tony George.
Following the Los Angeles gig, the bands will join 22 other Australian music acts in Texas for the South by Southwest festival.
"Bands come a long way and spend a lot of money to be involved in South by Southwest, so while they're in the US, Austrade wants to provide them with every opportunity," said Mr George.
The bands will compete against more than 1,200 other groups showcasing at South by Southwest which is attended by some 10,000 music industry players.
The festival commences on March 10 and runs for nine days.

Missy Higgins, Imogen Bailey team up to prevent cruelty to animals
Missy's new pet project
by Sally MacMillan, from thesundaynews.com.au
IN less than a year she's cleaned up at ARIA and in top-selling album charts, toured the US and UK and has been nominated for the Australian Jack Awards for live music.
Along the way the Missy Higgins, 22, has added a special ambassadorship to her CV, joining PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) as a spokeswoman.
A recent photo session in the US with Jake the piglet is about to sweep the world as Higgins joins fellow Australians in the band Something For Kate and models Sarah Jane and Imogen Bailey in anti-cruelty campaign ads.
Photo: Sarah Jane in PETA anti-KFC campaign
For the singer, speaking out against animal abuse is just as important as learning her debut album, The Sound of White had gone platinum eight times (600,000-plus sales) and swept all away to be the top-selling album in Australia for 2005.
"Animal rights is important to me because my whole life I felt that animals are on a par with us," she said.
"Rather than the people ruling the Earth and stomping around and treating everyone below us like, uh, animals, I've just always thought that we should treat animals with more respect and more like equal beings, rather than beings that are below us – and treated cruelly."
This isn't a new passion for the Melbourne-born singer/songwriter. While her singing ability came to the fore in high school – winning the Triple J Unearthed competition – she has been committed to animal welfare since primary school.
"There was this one teacher when I was in Grade 3 or 4 who just taught us all about respecting animals, and I became really connected with it. I didn't want to kill mosquitoes and I didn't want to swat flies. I was just one with every being on Earth."
Higgins made a full commitment to vegetarianism a few years ago and swears she's never felt better.
"I much prefer eating green vegetables rather than meat," she says. "I just feel much healthier on the inside. I just feel like I'm doing something that's much better for my body."
Her mission is to build awareness of how cruel sow stalls are for pigs.
Meeting Jake in Atlanta brought it home to her.
"This little piggy would have actually been raised in a sow stall," she says, eyes brimming. "That's a cage that's only big enough for him to grow to his full capacity, and there's no more, so eventually he wouldn't even have had any room to turn around. He was rescued from that just recently. So I guess I just want people to see that first-hand and relate to that, because it's something that's going on and people have to realise that.
"I think in order for people to be able to help causes like this, there has to be knowledge about what actually goes on in the slaughter houses and the sow stalls."
Not to forget battery hen farming.
"I think people just have to spread the word and try everything that they can do to stop this from happening and to stop big companies like KFC from encouraging this kind of thing. I think knowledge is the key.
"I visited a battery-hen farm once, and it was a shed as long as you could see and as wide as you could see. It was just wall-to-wall with chickens with absolutely no room to move. They were just completely cramped in next to each other, and they were being used just to get fat and basically to be slaughtered.
"KFC is the largest fast-food restaurant in the world that hasn't implemented an animal welfare policy. There's fast-food chains like Burger King and McDonald's that have already implemented it, and KFC just refuses to."
Back to Jake. "It was my first experience holding a pig," she laughs. "I've never held a baby pig before, and he was really smelly, but really cute. I think that he warmed to me after a while."
Now Higgins is hoping her large fan base will support her mission.
"I'm hoping the reaction that my fans have is an intense one. I'm hoping that it will make them think about what they're eating and what they're doing.
"I'm hoping that if they haven't thought about this issue before, then it will make them think and maybe evoke something inside them to do something about it."
Just like Missy Higgins.

Punk legends D.O.A. Rock Sundance Film Festival, premier new film "American Hardcore"
from SuddenDeath.com, Photos by Michael Loccisano/FilmMagic
D.O.A. has just returned from witnessing themselves in "American Hardcore" and put on a great show at the Sundance Film Festival. Canada's punk rock legends D.O.A. along with the incomparable Circle Jerks blew the roof off the Star Club in Park City, Utah at Sundance, one of the world's most prestigious film festivals. The top notch performance by both of these groundbreaking bands was a perfect foil for a great film.
"American Hardcore", a new film by Paul Rachman and Steven Blush is a history of the formation of hardcore punk rock, American style. The hardcore style of punk sprung up on the west coast of North America around 1980. There was a journalist in San Francisco who coined the term after seeing bands like Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, The Dils, D.O.A. and The Avengers. Hardcore punk was seen as a non-compromising, kick the establishment in the groin, radical, political (but still full of humor) type of movement. The members of D.O.A. saw this article and thought what a great title for an album, so in 1981 they D.O.A. released the album "Hardcore 81" and that went a very long ways to making "hardcore" part of the musical vernacular.
In 2001 Steven Blush had his book "American Hardcore, a tribal history" published, soon after that, he teamed up with Paul Rachman to make "American Hardcore" a fast moving, spirited and accurate account of the movement in its heyday 1980-83.
The film features tons of great raw footage of all the key bands of the era. The story is told by the punk rock anti-heroes themselves. It is glued together with interviews and anecdotes by; Keith Morris (Circle Jerks), Joe Shithead Keithley (D.O.A.), HR (Bad Brains), Gregg Ginn, Chuck Dukowski and Henry Rollins (Black Flag) and Ian McKaye (Minor Threat) amongst others. The film adroitly captures the feeling of the time by opening with the inauguration of president Ronnie Raygun. It all seems very apropos when one thinks about today's leadership or lack thereof.
Upcoming D.O.A. "War on 45" tour dates:
On the heels of their latest release "War on 45 (March To The End)" on Sudden Death Records, D.O.A. announces these upcoming shows

More info on DOA:
Canada’s legendary Punk Kings, who helped spread punk rock counterculture around the world, approach a momentous milestone. For nearly 25 years D.O.A. has been happily slashing away at all manner of philosophical enemies. They’ve travelled the globe almost continuously since they formed in 1978; they released their first snarling piece of vinyl, the “Disco Sucks” EP in June of that year. That slab of plastic opened the door to international prominence, riots, rip-off record companies and three generations of fans.
In 1981, D.O.A. made the term “hardcore” their own and pushed it into the common vernacular with their legendary album “Hardcore 81” and subsequent tours. Consequently, D.O.A. has been cited as a major influence for tons of bands ranging from The Red Hot Chili Peppers to Green Day to Rancid to The Offspring. They followed that up with their ground breaking EP “War on 45” and “Bloodied But Unbowed.”
D.O.A. has always worn their politics on their sleeves. They’ve done a lot shit disturbing along the way. They’ve been harassed and busted and survived all that crap. D.O.A.’s blatant slogan,TALK-ACTION=0 sums it all up.
The stuff the band’s worked on through the years; they’ve played benefits for Rape Relief, anti-racism, rock-for brains, anti-globalization, OXFAM, first nations rights, anti censorship and environmental causes amongst many others.
D.O.A.’s sound and philosophy has been held together by Canada’s Godfather of punk Joey “Shithead” Keithley’s songwriting, singing and guitar playing. D.O.A.’s sound, although always rooted in punk rock, has managed to create a fair bit of consternation for those who would like to choose musical boxes. It’s punk, but it incorporates rock n’ roll, reggae, metal, and ska. Whatever the hell their sound is, it’s pulled out a “Yeah, that’s the shit!” from the likes of Henry Rollins,The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sonic Youth, Jello Biafra, Bif Naked, John Doe, Randy Bachman, Dave Grohl, Pete Seeger, Yada,Yada,Yada, you get the picture.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary, Sudden Death has released the definitive D.O.A. album, “War and Peace,” a 25-track compilation of D.O.A.’s greatest recorded moments. War and Peace starts at the roots of “Disco Sucks”, “The Enemy” and “Liar For Hire” right through to their modern blitzkrieg sound of “Dead Men Tell No Tales” and “Just Say No To The WTO.”
D.O.A. will blast through live shows with their new rock solid lineup of Joey, The Great Baldini on drums and new bassist Damned Dan Yaremko [Econoline Crush, Bif Naked]. Watch for extensive touring in Canada and around the world in 2004 and beyond.
In 2003, Shithead’s first book “I Shithead,a life in punk” came out on Arsenal Pulp Press. It is a definitive and raunchy look at punk and the spread of counter culture throughout western society. Sudden Death has also released “Let’s Start The Action,” an electronic tribute to D.O.A. performed by 20 different artists from around the world and inspired by the anti-globalization movement. As well, Sudden Death has recently re-released D.O.A.’s 1st two albums”Something Better Change” and “Hardcore 81”, recently picked as two of the top 5 Canadian punk rock albums of all time. A full length documentary on D.O.A. “Talk-Action=0” is being developed by filmmaker Marcus Rogers [The Widower].
D.O.A. has travelled a long, tough road that has taken them around the world and the raw energy continues. The band has never been more active, having recently released their second DVD, D.O.A.’s “Greatest Shits” and a split album with metal legend Thor entitled “Are U Ready”. Recently Mayor Larry Campbell of Vancouver declared December 21st to be “D.O.A. Day” in Vancouver. The band has also been featured in punk and political books published around the world.

PRINCE CHARLES TO BE DOGGED BY PETA 'BEAR' AT PUBLIC APPEARANCES
from PETA.org.uk
Group Vows to Tail HRH Until the Use of Bears’ Fur for Guards’ Hats Ends
27 January 2006
Imogen Bailey, singer and supermodel
Bristol – Prince Charles is in for a bear of a time: A PETA member dressed in a bear costume has vowed to follow Prince Charles to all his upcoming public engagements until he convinces the Queen to switch to faux fur for the Buckingham Palace Guards’ ceremonial bearskin hats. The bear made his debut at the prince’s royal visit to the Millennium Galleries in Sheffield on Tuesday, where the prince spoke with the bear, saying, “I recognize you! I’ve seen you in America!” Waving a sign that reads, “Save My Skin”, the PETA “bear” will greet Prince Charles at today’s visit to the Wellspring Healthy Living Centre in Bristol, Monday’s visit to the Copland Sports Centre in Gloucestershire and next Friday’s appearance at the Holburne Museum of Art in Bath.
It can take the entire hide of one bear to make just one guard’s headpiece. The skins come from bears shot in Canada, including many who are shot several times before they die. Some escape the hunters and bleed to death. When mother bears are killed, orphaned cubs are left behind to starve.
After months of campaigning, PETA Europe reached the negotiating table with the British Ministry of Defence (MoD) and is now working with several faux-fur manufacturers to find a suitable alternative to real bear skins, as the first trialled faux-fur hats were deemed unacceptable by the MoD. Although this is a step in the right direction, Queen Elizabeth and the MoD continue to allow bears to be killed for these hats while the trials are underway.
“Prince Charles is a staunch defender of the environment, so it follows that he would oppose the slaughter of black bears for something as frivolous as a ceremonial hat”, says PETA Europe Managing Director Ingrid E. Newkirk. “Until he does, the PETA ‘bear’ will follow him, making the case that bearskin hats – not bears – should be extinct.”
PETA Europe has enlisted high-profile support from supermodel Imogen Bailey, Sir Roger Moore, Morrissey, Julian Clary, Pamela Anderson, Twiggy, Amanda Holden, Hayley Mills and others in calling for a ban on bear fur in the Household Guards’ headwear.
For more information, please visit PETA.org.uk. A complete list of the dates and locations of the events the “bear” will attend is available upon request.
