Why Avril will always out-Juno Arcade Fire
by Heath McCoy, The National Post
If you follow the international music press, you know that some of the hottest Canadian acts right now include Arcade Fire, Feist, the New Pornographers, The Dears, Broken Social Scene, Wolf Parade, Buck 65, Stars, Metric, Death From Above 1979, Chad Van Gaalen, The Constantines and Bedouin Soundclash, among others.
But when Juno Award nominations are announced in Toronto today, it's unlikely the nominees will reflect what was a banner year for Canadian music.
The country's version of the Grammy Awards doesn't have the best track record, to be sure. Most often it's been on par with the American award show, in terms of a rather conservative, old-fashioned approach to the music business.
Indie names such as Arcade Fire, the New Pornographers and Stars may be upping Canada's cool cachet around the world, but they're doing so on an indie-rock level that doesn't translate into mainstream radio play or platinum record sales. It's therefore a safe bet that the country's indie- rock revolution will not dominate this year's Juno Awards.
Oh, it will be acknowledged in a few categories -- let's hope -- but don't expect the nominees list to look radically different from that of recent years. Remember, major-label stars Nickelback, Avril Lavigne, Michael Buble, Neil Young, Bryan Adams, Our Lady Peace, Jann Arden, Terri Clark and Alanis Morissette all had very successful years.
Nominations for the major categories -- album of the year, group of the year, rock album of the year and others -- are based on sales, according to the rules on the Juno Web site.
"Juno positioning is very political," explains Larry LeBlanc, bureau chief for Billboard magazine in Canada. "The major labels bring a major part of the financing to the table to bring in [big artists] for the Junos." And, as the awards are televised, the networks want major artists present, to secure the best ratings possible for the award show, LeBlanc says.
This year, for example, major label stars Coldplay will perform at the event, to be televised April 2 on CTV from Halifax.
"I don't know if we need Coldplay there," LeBlanc says. "Isn't our industry big enough? This is the strongest year for Canadian music worldwide, when somebody like BBC Radio 2 does two one-hour specials [on the Canadian indie scene]. The Junos are a celebration of Canadian music, and I don't think Coldplay is needed."
Even so, the popular British band will get people watching the awards show, and as a major label (EMI) is able to supply a band like Coldplay, this most certainly gives them clout as to how the ceremony is geared.
Alexander Mair, publisher of Applaud!, a domestic industry magazine that tracks Canadian music on the world stage, also questions the decision to bring in Coldplay, even though he understands the reasoning behind it. "If Coldplay gets four minutes [of Juno airtime], that's four minutes [Alberta artist] Corb Lund, or some other smaller Canadian act can't get," Mair says.
The Juno Awards are presided over, and the winners are voted on, by members of the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS).
CARAS is made up of individuals and artists working within the Canadian music industry. But the major labels have huge influence within the CARAS membership.
"In the past, the major labels have had the most votes, collectively," Mair says "Arcade Fire's distributor in Canada . . . probably only one or two of their staff would have (CARAS) votes and that would be it. So, if they're up against Billy Talent, Billy Talent's label, Warner Music probably has a substantial number of votes.
"They would have people in every major city working for them who were members of CARAS. And the broadcasters who support Billy Talent are more likely, perhaps, to vote for Billy Talent than for Arcade Fire, who didn't get as much airplay."
A number of independent record labels have distribution from major labels, which helps their cause, LeBlanc says. But too many CARAS members are ill-informed about the cutting edge indie bands now on the scene.
"Some of the people who are members of CARAS are only finding out about Arcade Fire now, and the only reason is because they were on the cover of Time Magazine," LeBlanc says. "You can't ignore a band like that now. . . . But how many of them know about Death From Above 1979? The chance of (that band) being on the show? Very little."
But despite the politics involved, some members of the indie rock community are optimistic about the coming Juno nominations. Amanda VanDenBrock, who handles touring for Arts & Crafts, the Toronto-based indie label that houses such acclaimed names as Broken Social Scene, Stars and Feist, has faith in the Juno system.
"I think Canada's not going to be like (the Grammys)," she says. "I would like to think we're a little bit more open to our indies. We don't have such a Hollywood star system."
VanDenBrock adds: "The Junos are voted on by the members of CARAS. I have been a member of CARAS before and I've voted and I'm definitely a small fish. And I know a lot of small fish in the industry that have been CARAS members and have voted."
Sometimes the rift between the Junos and young, indie bands comes down to the bands themselves, LeBlanc believes. "Some of these artists are so independent, they don't want to be involved with the Junos," he says. "Sometimes they feel it's close to the mainstream, and if the people buying your records are very anti-major label, they don't like their bands cozying up to the establishment. . . .
"I raised a stink last year when the Junos were in Winnipeg. I said 'Hey, what about (Winnipeg band) The Weakerthans?' People looked at me like I was crazy. But I'm not sure the Weakerthans would have agreed to go on television."
LeBlanc, for one, is not predicting a major shift for the 2006 Juno Awards.
"But this could be the year they surprise us," he adds. "You just never know. All we can speak about for sure is the past."

Janice-Marie sings "Love is the Only Thing That Matters"
Janice-Marie is unquestionably not a new kid on the block. Nor is she unfamiliar with the intricate machinations of the music industry. As founder and principal songwriter of the internationally acclaimed and Grammy award winning group A Taste of Honey, Janice-Marie is back in the spotlight that has long been her home.
A brief glance at Janice-Marie's musical accolades may seem daunting to both insiders and outsiders alike. A Taste of Honey's self-titled debut release, rocked the record industry in more ways than one. The release featured the multi-platinum international smash hit 'Boogie Oogie Oogie', a Janice-Marie penned composition, which garnered the group a Grammy. 'Best New Artist of the Year'. Janice-Marie was also nominated in two additional categories: 'Best R&B Single' and 'Best Vocal Performance by a Group or Duo', a phenomenal accomplishment for a new group. Janice-Marie, with the group A Taste of Honey proved their success was no fluke. Their second release, 'Another Taste' earned the group even more international acclaim. The album received the coveted Gold Prize in the 8th Annual Tokyo Music Festival. During that same awards ceremony, Janice-Marie was honored with the Gold Prize for songwriter. 'Do it Good,' another Janice-Marie composition, as well as the 'Another Taste' album were also certified Gold in Japan.
When speaking of Janice-Marie, some may say success comes easy. But perhaps it's more fitting to say, success comes naturally. As Janice-Marie resumes her rightful place in the forefront of the music arena, she is once again positioning herself as a formidable contender. Her unique sound and style is completely versatile. 'I like a variety of music. Classical music in the morning, Reggae in the afternoon. And in the evening I like to get my boogie on. At night, when the moon is right, give me love songs! I'm a ballad, fireplace, take-a-walk-up-in-the-hills sort of person,' says Janice-Marie. To this end, her music punctuates her diversity of spirit, a diversity that was successfully exhibited with the international mega hit 'Sukiyaki,' released on A Taste of Honey's third Album, 'Twice as Sweet.' Japan's Kyo Sakamoto's 1963 hit 'Sukiyaki',re-written by Janice-Marie in English and produced by George Duke, resulted in another Gold record and more international acclaim.
In 1984, Janice-Marie took a much needed and well-deserved hiatus. Although, Janice-Marie stepped off the stage, she never strayed far from her music. Over the years she has collaborated with such artists as rap artist Ice Cube for 'Gangsta's Fairytale 2', from the 'Predator' release, Positive K, on the certified Gold release, 'I Got a Man,' and Prince Markie Dee on 'So Very Happy'.
Janice-Marie's music can also be heard in several television commercials including Coca-Cola's Classic Coke and Rold Gold Pretzels for Frito Lay Inc. Currently, her music is also being featured in a Burger King commercial.
Janice-Marie has been a featured guest on the 'Caryl and Marilyn Show,' and her music has been showcased on a variety of television shows including, 'Muppets Tonight,' 'The Nanny,' 'Access Hollywood,' 'The Oprah Winfrey Show,' 'Homeboys from Outer Space,' ' VH1,' 'Nothing Sacred,' and HBO's 'Breast Men,' to name a few.
In more recent years Janice-Marie has returned to the stage with live performances at the Universal Amphitheater where she was featured as the opening act for MCA's recording artist, Al Green. She has also performed with Lionel Richie and Gloria Gaynor to a full house at the Hollywood Palladium. Janice-Marie 1999 tours dates include North Carolina, Lousiana, Connecticut, Boston and San Diego.
Throughout the years, Janice-Marie's music has been covered, sampled and borrowed many times. Her music of yesterday is greatly responsible for the successes of numerous 'R&B,' 'Pop,' 'Rap' and 'Hip Hop' hits of today. Her music has a life of its own. 1998 produced four European covers including the new Peter Andre's single, 'All Night, All Right,' and Martin Carboo, a European recording artist, is climbing the charts with 'Boogie' (his version of 'Boogie Oogie Oogie'). In the United States and Japan, her song 'Delicious' is featured in the blockbuster movie, 'Step Mom,' and her music was also featured on MC Lyte's album 'Seven and Seven.' Her music is still widely played both here and abroad and now she has a new, younger generation of fans that have come to love 'Boogie Oogie Oogie' just as those of us who were around in the 70's.Recently, 'Sukiyaki' (with English lyrics written by Janice-Marie), was once again certified Gold, selling over one million copies for the recording group 4PM. To top it off, her music was featured in the motion pictures Contact, 54, and Mystery Man.
After such a prolific period working behind the scenes, it is only appropriated for Janice-Marie, the record producer, musician, songwriter and entertainer to return as Janice-Marie, recording artist. And, with that return comes Janice-Marie, "A Taste of Honey" back on the road in support of her brand new CD entitled "Hiatus of the Heart" boasting a sound with sweet melodies that go down smooth and easy, along with grooves that make your body move.
The new millennium finds Janice-Marie's music featured in a variety of television series and motions pictures including Early Edition (CBS), Beverly Hills 90210, the Martin Short Short Show, as well the motion picture Screwed, to name a few. Janice-Marie's career has been profiled on VH1's 'Where Are They Now" as well as "The TV Guide Channel", not to mention her profiles on "Extra TV" and "E! Entertainment", which are scheduled to air the beginning of June 2000. Janice-Marie has also been performing to sold out audiences across the country.
Janice-Marie has decided to take her place center stage and she does so with a style and grace that is all her own. Her new CD entitled "Hiatus of the Heart" contains song's of love and life. And...yes there are songs that will make you get up and boogie.
The first single "Love Is The Only Thing That Matters", has been climbing the AC 40 Charts. Simply put, radio loves it and we know that you will too.
Alice O'Neill of Hollywood Behind-the-Scenes writes in her review of 'Hiatus of the Heart', ... 'she seduces listeners with her vocal art and guitar expertise. She gives new meaning to the age-old longing to be free, in all its manifestations.'
If after listening to the 'Hiatus of the Heart' CD you find yourself inspired and uplifted, don't blame it on the 'Boogie,' blame it on Janice-Marie.
"The songs on 'Hiatus Of The Heart' reflect my journey through life's wondrous maze. Let Love Rain Down." Janice-Marie on album 'Hiatus of the Heart'.

HurricaneHealing.us benefits those in need, through Salvation Army
HURRICANE HEALING LAUNCHED:
Sydney, Australia: Blue Pie Productions and IdeaFarm are pleased to announce the launch of www.hurricanehealing.us Hurricane Healing is a website where you can hear and buy music donated by artists from all over the world. Funds received will aid victims of the 2005 Hurricane Season.
50 cents in every dollar spent on music from Hurricane Healing goes directly to The Salvation Army in the U.S. and will be used in ongoing assistance for those affected by hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Wilma and all the other storms of the 2005 Hurricane Season. 20 cents goes to the rights holders of each track and, if they choose, that too can go to charity. The remaining 30 cents is used for project administration.
Hurricane Healing is built on a "digital platform" and is a highly efficient way to sell and distribute music. This enables Hurricane Healing to donate half of every dollar of revenue generated to the Salvation Army. While buying music online isn’t new, what is new here is that Hurricane Healing is using the same simple, proven business model to raise much needed funds globally for the Salvation Army. Initially, music will be sold online through the MSN Network with iTunes and other digital distribution retailers coming online in the coming weeks. The hope is that the gift of music that heals will be a popular one in the U.S. and all over the world this Holiday Season.
Major Eda Hokom, Divisional Commander of The Salvation Army in Sacramento, California says: “It is a privilege and a blessing to see companies such as Blue Pie Productions and IdeaFarm reach out across the world to help others in need. Hurricane Healing funds will impact many lives, and assist The Salvation Army to continue its ongoing work with the survivors of such devastation. Whether it is a sandwich, a hot meal, clothing, a safe nights rest, a hug, a listening ear, an encouraging word, a prayer, assistance with finding a new job and home - your monetary support is invaluable. Thank You.”
Already there are more than 130 artists on board and the list is growing daily. To date artists include: Janice-Marie, Eric Bibb, The Frames, Mundy, Andy Bey, Yuya Joe, Michael St Clair, The Angels, Tarmac Adam, The Scoldees, Gordon Waller, Peter and Gordon, Mogul, Sahra, and Australia’s Hurricane Healing Ambassador, James Blundell. Hurricane Healing is also in discussions with Keb’ Mo’ and many other U.S., Australian and international artists.
U.S. Ambassador for the project is Grammy Winner, Janice-Marie Johnson. Janice-Marie has a very personal reason for being involved in the Hurricane Healing project, her uncle was one of the poor souls left behind in New Orleans. 85 years of age and blind, he died of dehydration on Highway 10 in the days following Hurricane Katrina.
Janice-Marie say’s “I am honoured to be involved with the Hurricane Healing project. My hope is that other artists will join me and the many others already working with Hurricane Healing and together we will build an exciting online community that helps support the very good work being done on the ground by the Salvation Army.”
As the huge clean-up effort on Wilma begins, so does the healing process - a global call for artists has gone out, artists are responding and the Hurricane Healing website is now ‘live’ at www.hurricanehealing.us

Pop music show Countdown, ARIA charts, Split Enz all making comeback
Countdown's ringtone revival
by Vincent Blake, from australianit.news.com.au
IT was back to the future last week for the local music industry.
Reports of the resurrection of the ABC music program Countdown coincided with the rebranding of the Australian Recording Industry Association's popular music charts and New Zealand band Split Enz getting back together.
Countdown was required viewing for many younger baby boomers and others who were into popular music between 1974 and 1987.
Its relaunch is reported to include a highlights DVD of the series, a book, merchandise, a radio show and a ringtone of the show's theme.
Countdown's former host, Ian (Molly) Meldrum, has reportedly said that someone younger should front the show.
Younger people who have only seen Meldurm as a guest on other people's programs or reruns of Countdown may wonder why he became so famous.
While he has a tendency to mumble and rant, he is a great supporter and creator of Australian music and it should not be forgotten that he produced The Real Thing, the Australian single with the longest run on top of the charts.
Given the popularity of portable music and downloadable ringtones, it will come as no surprise that the new sponsor of ARIA's charts is Motorola.
The Motorola ARIA Charts will be broadcast nationwide on Nova radio stations in a program hosted by Jabba, a presenter well known to watchers of Channel (V) and listeners to Nova Brisbane.
Ironically, one of Split Enz's better-known hits is History Never Repeats.
The Kiwi rockers, who defy pigeonholing, formed in 1972 and disbanded in 1984.
Frontman Tim Finn says the idea of getting back together came up during rehearsals for a special performance last year, when Split Enz was inducted into the Australian music industry's hall of fame as part of the ARIA awards.
The Split Enz Australian tour will begin in Brisbane on June 7, followed by Sydney on June 9, Melbourne on June 11, Adelaide on June 13, and it will wind up in Perth on June 16.
The launch of the Motorola ARIA Charts last week had a touch of back-to-the-future about it as well.
Local band, the Rogue Traders, performed a few songs from its album Here Come the Drums.
The first number sounded to this reviewer a lot like the Knack's My Sharona and the title track brought to mind Elvis Costello's Punk it Up.
The punters love it, however.
Here Come the Drums is charting at number four on the Aria album listing after 14 weeks.
The ARIA charts are available at www.ariacharts.com.au

Split Enz announce reunion tour starting June 2006
Split Enz split no more
from EdmontonSun.com
MELBOURNE, Australia -- The New Zealand band Split Enz will reform for a tour in June, 22 years after they split, members announced yesterday.
The band, which shifted its base to the southern city of Melbourne soon after they formed in 1972, will tour five Australian cities from June 7-16.
Frontman and founder Tim Finn said the idea of a return tour came during rehearsals for a special performance last year when Split Enz was inducted into the Australian music industry's hall of fame.
The six-member band farewelled fans with their Enz With a Bang! tour in 1984 after recording hits including History Never Repeats, I See Red and I Got You.
The lineup will be Tim Finn, his brother Neil Finn - who went on to form the internationally acclaimed band Crowded House in 1985 - Eddie Rayner, Noel Crombie, Nigel Griggs, and Malcolm Green.
Former drummer Paul Hester, who also became part of Crowded House, hanged himself in Melbourne last year at the age of 46.
The latest tour is not the first since Split Enz formally disbanded. The band toured in 1993 and several members were involved in a 1997 tour of orchestrated versions of their songs with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.
The Finn brothers have recently toured the world on the back of their joint album Everyone is Here.
