Event that's music to our ears

FOUNDED in Lorne, Victoria by siblings Simon and Naomi Daly in 1993, the Falls Festival (originally known as Rock Above the Falls) has become one of the biggest events on the Australian music calendar.

Since expanding into Tasmania three years ago, Falls has established itself as one of the state's main annual attractions and has also helped invigorate the local music scene.

The festival is held on the Dunbabin family's picturesque Marchwiel property overlooking Marion Bay, about 45 minutes east of Hobart.

Gates open at 11am tomorrow, with 13,000 keen punters to party on until the festival winds up on New Year's Day.

To get them in the mood, a movie marathon begins at 3pm tomorrow featuring Dig!, End Of The Century: The Story Of The Ramones, Twenty-Four Hour Party People, Tassie surf film Sections, Punk: Attitude, Horrorscopes, Murderball and selected works by directors Spike Jonze and Michael Gondry.

The live music kicks off at 11am on Friday, with about 50 acts (including bands, DJs and comedians) spread across the two stages, including the Dandy Warhols, Wolfmother, Hoodoo Gurus, Ozomatli, Ugly Duckling, former Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown, The Shins, Offcuts, the Cat Empire, TZU, Dallas Crane, Pete Murray, End Of Fashion, Little Birdy and many more.

Tasmanian acts this year include The Embers, Jordan Millar, Waiter, The Styles, the Benjafield Collective, 3to2 and comedians Fin Kruckemeyer, Andy Muirhead, Tim Logan and the Bedroom Philosopher.

Another feature of the festival will be the Marion Markets and the Healing Fields, where patrons can find a diverse range of products, workshops and activities including massage and yoga.

The Falls Festival is a licensed all-ages event.
